Congress Restores U S Citizenship to Robert E Lee

The House approved a bill restoring Confederate general Robert E Lee to U S citizenship by a 407 to 10 vote after Senate approval. President Ford is expected to sign. Lee IV said the move closes a historical chapter and is good for record straightening. Most opposition came from Northern Democrats seeking amnesty for draft evaders.

Senate Votes August Recess Approved by Senate

The Senate approved a large majority vote 72 to 22 to recess from August 1 until September 3. The measure moves to the House for concurrence before the break. Leaders may recall the Senate during the recess if warranted by public interest.

Senate Eyes Fast Action on Voting Rights Bill

Senate leaders plan to invoke the anti filibuster rule to speed a House passed measure extending and broadening the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Senator Byrd said 60 votes are expected to apply the rule with one hour per senator for debate and amendments. The chamber aims to pass by Thursday or Saturday.

LSD Tests Reported at Edgewood Army Facility

Edgewood Arsenal officials declined comment on a Washington Post report that chemical and drug experiments on servicemen continue at the facility. Dr Van Sim, civilian medical director, said a program exists and will persist, with a Pentagon press conference planned.

Driving Tour Set Sunday For New Aiken Hospital

Aiken Countians may tour the new HCA hospital Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will stay in their cars during the drive around the 70 percent complete four story building on University Parkway near the Aiken campus. The facility holds 190 beds with plans for expansion and future fifth floor addition.

ACLU Drops Suit Over Aiken County School Grouping

The American Civil Liberties Union withdrew its 1971 suit against the Aiken County Board of Education over alleged inequalities in ability grouping. Board chairwoman Mrs JR Lynn Hillery called the withdrawal a relief and district superintendent Ted B Willis said it was welcome news as the board unanimously consented to end the case with no reason given.

Bank leaders vacuumed after branch opening

Bank president James D McNair and senior vice president Wade M Brodie cleaned the new Farmers & Merchants Branch Bank by vacuuming the carpet upon the opening. David Keel returned from vacation to find a broken deep freeze. Lightning destroyed the appliance and $400 worth of meat spoiled. Neighbors disposed of the smell, leaving Keel to cry.

The Aiken County Board of Education tabled seven conditions for a zoning variance to permit a privately funded North Augusta High School stadium. Attorney Henry Busbee said the checklist was ambiguous and urged mature review. Ford Vetoes Old Oil Price Extension and Ceiling Plans

The administration program would raise gasoline by seven cents a gallon by 1977 end per White House estimates. Democrats claim fifteen cents. The plan ends the five hundred twenty five cent per barrel ceiling on old oil from wells at least three years old. About 60 percent of US production is old oil. Ford vetoed a bill to extend old oil controls through year end and set an eleven dollar twenty eight cent per barrel ceiling on new oil. Congress cannot override with a two thirds vote. Ford vows to veto a bill to maintain current price structure through March 1.
