Gov Hodges to form drought panels across four regions

Governor Hodges will appoint four regional drought panels to meet next week and craft plans to curb swimming fishing and industrial discharges from drought stricken rivers. US weighs North Korea plan to trade missiles for space launches

South Carolina Leads in Job Growth but Lags in Pay

A Census Bureau report shows South Carolina added 3.5 percent more jobs from 1997 to 1998, ranking 14th nationally with more than 1.5 million workers, yet the state’s average pay of 25 266 was 36th. The national growth was 2.7 percent and the 1998 average salary was 30 608. The payroll rose 8 percent to 386 billion while the US grew 8.6 percent. An economist from Furman University comments on the low pay in lower wage service and tourism sectors.
