Citizenship applications surge after Sept. 11 attacks
INS reports 519 523 new naturalization applications from Oct 2001 to May 2002, 65 percent more than the prior year. May alone saw 48 378 apps, a 121 percent increase. Despite the rise, citizenship grants in the period fell 10 percent as authorities tighten screenings. Immigrants express patriotism and urgency to secure citizenship amid post‑9/11 scrutiny. Local figures Ismat Bayumi and Lisa Gonzales discuss personal stakes and emotions in the process.
