An elderly woman, Edith Lott Bodie 75, died after her 1966 Oldsmobile collided with a northbound 1972 Ford flatbed on Camp Rawls Road at Festiva l Trail Road in Wagener area. A 1-year-old and others were injured. Bodie and the toddler were airlifted to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Aiken County faces renewed scrutiny of laws on youths riding in truck beds after a fatal wreck on Belvedere Clear Water Road. Fifteen year old Ashton Groomes died at the scene, his 11 year old brother Andrew Batchelor died later, and four children under 15 in the truck bed survived. The crash involved Ashton driving a truck with his father Michael Batchelor 34 and others nearby.
In a spotlight on pickup truck safety, 14 year old Brandon Batchelor died Friday afternoon from injuries in a crash. State patrol says several incidents involve trucks with youths riding in open beds, and in some cases juveniles driving, with fatalities common in such incidents.
