Lowcountry steelmaker to close plant after cleanup orders
Macalloy Corp of North Charleston will shut down in about two months, leaving over 200 workers unemployed. Regulators from DHEC and EPA cited dozens of environmental violations and ordered a costly cleanup, including a stormwater system to prevent contaminants from reaching Shipyard Creek. Production of ferrochromium began in 1941 and the site has long contained groundwater contamination from chromium and other heavy metals. Local union leaders decried the move as devastating and questioned layoff handling as workers face final notices and teardown of facilities.
