Renovations Begin On South Carolina State Museum
In Columbia the South Carolina State Museum, housed in the Mt. Vernon Mills building, begins a 1987 opening project with Governor Riley and board chair Lipscomb breaking a wall. Heritage Associates will invest up to 15 million dollars while the state leases back the building, housing two thirds of the museum plus other tenants.

Survivors bear scars of San Ysidro McDonald’s massacre a year on
In San Ysidro California survivors heal from major injuries while emotional trauma lingers. The July 18 attack by James Oliver Huberty killed 22 and wounded 20 more, with a new McDonald’s now three blocks away and a debated memorial park proposed for the site. Police psychologist Mike Mantell cites widespread but varied fallout among 175 officers involved.
