The Aiken Standard will publish a Sunday morning paper starting October 6 after two years of study. President Samuel A. Cothran cites Belden Associates findings and city growth, with a new $1 million printing press and color sections planned.
Aiken County jail reports an unnamed inmate was treated at Aiken Community Hospital then at Augusta Hospital after an incident last night. Public Works Director Alvin Bryan declined further details pending investigation by the Aiken County Sheriff's Department. Doris Gravitt led the jail in administrator's absence with no comment.
Aiken County Planning Commission will discuss a possible county zoning ordinance at its Thursday 8 p.m. meeting after a directive from the county council following residents’ complaints about Centre South, a mixed use project at Silver Bluff and Pine Log Roads. Also on the agenda are development standards for the Comfort Inn on U.S. 1 near the Aiken-Vernes Industrial Park. The meeting site is the county council chambers at 736 Richland Ave. W. in Aiken.
Cloudy conditions continue tomorrow with a 20 percent chance of showers. Highs will reach the 90s tomorrow and tonight will be partly cloudy with 60s lows. Winds around 5 to 10 mph from the east.
In Greenville AP report, 1985 Miss South Carolina Vicki Harrell alleges pageant president Joe Sanders threatened to strip her crown unless she used Garden Originals run by his wife Gail Sanders as her official groomer for Miss America in Atlantic City. Harrell says the ties between pageant and the firm warrant investigation.

The South Carolina Peach Festival draws large crowds for beach music, pageant, road race and parade despite an almost total wipeout of the Upstate peach crop last year. Officials note peaches at stands were largely imported from Midlands counties amid estimates that 95 to 99 percent of local crops were ruined by freezes in January and April. Local agents warn many long-time growers may exit the business after a difficult decade.
