The Aiken Zoning Board of Adjustments will meet tomorrow at 5 p.m. to decide three variance requests about keeping or erecting satellite antenna dishes in front yards. Two homeowners seek front yard allowances under a new ordinance labeling dishes as back yard auxiliary structures. A third seeks permission to build a dish in a side yard. Tandem Development seeks variances for setbacks for a condo project at Laurens Street and South Boundary.

Man Held Off Officers Surrenders After Standoff
Matthew Mims 32, a former mental patient, barricaded in his parents’ Belvedere home for about three hours firing 11 shots at deputies and officers. He was treated for a gunshot wound and injuries, then taken to Edgefield County Hospital and later to the State Hospital in Columbia. SLED agents helped persuade him to surrender. he had prior murder conviction and recent probation release.

Jones May Get Board Position At Aiken County Meeting
Margaret Jones may be recommended tonight to replace Dr. Durward Pridgen on the Aiken County School Board. The term would run until December.
