Hearing set on competence in Kneece murder case
Bentonville Arkansas Circuit Judge David Clinger schedules an August third hearing to decide if James Arnottsaugaman and Rose Cushman, both of South Carolina, are competent to stand trial for capital murder in the deaths of Joann Kneece and James Floyd Suggs. Cushman and Baughman were arrested in Berryville with Kneece’s car. authorities say the killings were a hire by Kneece’s ex husband Etheridge Kneece to prevent testimony about a marijuana-smuggling operation. A second mental evaluation of Baughman is planned after an uncooperative first examination.

Sandhills study seeks cause of extra summer rain
North Carolina researchers led by Dr. Sethu Raman analyze 40 years of data to explain why the Sandhills strip across southern North Carolina and parts of Georgia and South Carolina gets more rain in June to August. They propose heating differences from sandy dry soil, urbanization drying, and moisture cirulation aided by Gulf winds as key factors. Computer models by Aaron Sims aim to improve rainfall forecasts.
