The Commerce Department reported a May trade deficit of 10.9 billion dollars, slightly up from April but the second smallest in almost three years. Imports rose 3.4 percent to 37.6 billion while exports edged up 2.3 percent to 26.6 billion, near a record.

County Budget: Aiken County Seals 1988 89 Plan
Aiken County officials finally balanced the fiscal year 1988 89 budget after a rushed process to meet the June 30 deadline. County administrator W Scott Barnes proposed an 18.1 million spending plan which grew to 18.4 million with a 500 000 reserve, then a court ruling on June 29 against the county over a 15 road maintenance fee threatens revenue projections of 1.5 million for the year.

Aiken Drug Raid Nets 39 Arrests In County Sweep
State and local officers led the RAID team in a raid across central and western Aiken County arresting 39 people on varied charges. The operation began around 8 30 p m and continued into morning with little gunfire and some resistance. Tunnermann to Announce Expulsion Decision Tonight
Nicaraguan ambassador Carlos Tunnermann faced a 5:30 p.m. deadline to depart the United States amid a U.S. push to expel diplomats. At an OAS meeting he challenged U.S. authority while U.S. ambassador Richard McCormack defended the move citing a 1975 accord. Tunnermann and a Nicaraguan military attache were among eight envoys ordered home after Sandinista actions. He claimed diplomats observed all norms and joked about fines for minor traffic violations.
