Doctors Leaving Rural South Carolina Strains Care Access
State officials report a decline in medical graduates staying in South Carolina over a decade, with rural counties hardest hit. From 1981 to 1990 rural doctors shrank as urban areas drew more residency graduates, leaving Marion and Loris with scarce obstetric and pediatric care and residents traveling long distances for services. Local hospitals describe recruiting as challenging, with doctors preferring proximity to cities or coastal areas.
