Beasley’s flag debate marks a long political toll in South Carolina
Former Governor David Beasley carried a 20 year burden over the Confederate battle flag after his 1996 TV reversal. Removal from the Statehouse grounds is hailed as unity achievement, though it followed years of threats, boycotts, and electoral defeats. Beasley later pursued Senate bids and civic work, earning recognition for moving the flag. Georgia’s Roy Barnes faced a similar fate over the emblem, ending in his 2002 electoral loss and later honors.
