Aging U.S. Moves Slow, Stays Put Amid Growth in Homeownership
Census estimates show 15.9 percent of Americans moved between March 1998 and March 1999, about 43 million people, slightly down from the prior year. Analysts tie the trend to an aging population and more homeowners, with 186 million owners in 1999 and renters rising to 81 million. Most movers stayed within the same county, 59 percent, while 20 percent moved to another county in the same state.
