End of Augusta Aiken trolley line marks final ride
The Augusta Aiken Railway and Electric Corporation ends its trolley service after years of losses and rising car travel times. The last car left Aiken at 11 o'clock Sunday night July 27, with officials from Augusta aboard, as crews began dismantling Monday morning. The line had struggled since 1915, losing up to $60,000 annually, with automobiles eroding revenue and travel times far longer than rail or motor options.
