Wagener relocates historic Kitchings Mill Library to new home
The Kitchings Mill Library, established in the 1880s by Della and James Kitching, moved from Highway 4 to Wagener after a two year effort by Aiken County officials. The move, approved by the County Council and funded with about 20000 from the contingency fund, drew residents who paused to view the procession and snap photos of the J E Oswalt and Sons truck. Mayor Mike Miller praised the project as worth the effort and pledged ongoing work to restore the library to its former look. Della Kitching built the library to foster literacy and a foundation later maintained it before ownership reverted and descendants occupied the property until 2012. The library was initially recommended to move to the Aiken County Historical Museum following approval by the Aiken Design Review Board.

Plans shifted from Aiken County Public Library to the Aiken County Historical Museum, with a March design review and a May 2013 zoning appeal denial over a 50 foot setback.
