William Ernest Downs Jr. has entered his final days after pleading guilty to the April 1999 murder of a 6 year old North Augusta boy. He is scheduled for lethal injection this Friday at the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia.
Officials said Friday's Downs execution would be witnessed by a small group of law enforcement and others but declined to confirm if victims’ family members would attend. Joe Count, who led the investigation, said he would be among the witnesses. Downs has sat on death row since 2002 for the kidnapping, rape and strangulation murder of U Matha, who vanished April 17, 1999, while riding a bicycle near North Augusta Greeneway. His body was found near Hammonds Ferry Road.
Aiken Public Safety reports a surge of calls after a Saturday notice about con artist Antonio D. Neal. The 39 year old Crawford Avenue resident was arrested Sunday morning on multiple counts of solicitation without a license and obtaining goods under false pretenses. Bond set at 8700 dollars. Victims include area businesses and churches. Further charges pending as police continue follow up calls.
The Savannah River Site opens Glass Waste Storage Building No 2 increasing DWPF canister storage to 2340 slots through 2015. The $69 million facility, completed two months early and $8 million under budget, supports long term waste disposal since Yucca Mountain remains unopen. DOE-SRS manager Jeff Allison and WSRC President Bob Pedde emphasize continued safe operation of DWPF as nuclear waste moves to storage canisters.
Southside residents urged the City of Aiken Planning Commission to block a proposed 134,723 square foot Sam's Club warehouse, 12 pump gas station and car wash at Whiskey Road and Powderhouse Road. Activists like Carole Carver and Jim Harden collected over 70 signatures and argue the site is too busy and ill suited for their neighborhoods. The commission meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 214 Park Ave.
