Vermonters Welcome Powerball Draw After First Hit

Denise and James Webster bought their first Powerball ticket in Vermont as Missouri and Pennsylvania tickets matched all six numbers for a 261.3 million jackpot. Powerball officials in Des Moines confirmed the winning numbers 19 21 26 31 51 Powerball 40. The Vermont Education Fund will receive proceeds, with an estimated 3.2 million in the first year.

Aiken bridges face aging infrastructure in county

A car and an 18 wheeler crossed the structurally deficient Gregg Canal bridge in Graniteville as 46 bridges in Aiken County are listed as deficient or obsolete. USC engineer notes no imminent failures as repairs begin with new pilings scheduled July 27, closing the bridge briefly.

One in Four U S Spans Remain Deficient After Repairs

After a decade of spending on bridges the number of deficient spans fell 18 percent from 1992 to 2002 but still totals 163 010 bridges or 28 percent of the system. AAA spokesman Mantill Williams warns delays will raise costs as two federal transportation bills earmarked 36 billion dollars for repairs since 1992.

Aiken Plant Could Benefit From Bradley and Paladin Upgrades

United Defense LLC in the Verenes Industrial Park stands to gain from a Senate funded upgrade package totaling 209.8 million for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and Paladin Howitzers. Senator Lindsey Graham highlighted the bill as essential for troops while United Defense officials noted local production, with 700 Bradley parts and about 100 Paladin parts produced in Aiken and a 175 worker base.

DOE officials lament ruling blocks sludge reclassification

A federal judge blocked the Energy Department from reclassifying tank sludge at Hanford, Idaho National Lab, and Savannah River Site. DOE spokesman Joe Davis says the ruling will raise cleanup costs, extend liquid waste storage, and burden taxpayers while the department weighs an appeal.
