Lawyers seek second opinion on murder case against mayor

In York Pennsylvania lawyers for Mayor Charlie Robertson asked for a second judicial opinion to determine if prosecutors have enough evidence to try him for the 32 year old murder of a Black Aiken woman during a race riot.

Traffic signals at Whiskey Road intersections fail briefly

Two sets of traffic lights at Whiskey Road intersections were out for a few hours early this morning and were reset by the Aiken Department of Public Safety maintenance division. Public safety officer Eddie George said the lights were back in working order within about 15 minutes of 8:15 a.m.

Woodside annexation debate returns to Aiken Council

Woodside Plantation phase three expansion faces renewed challenge from Jim Wetzel of Smart Growth Aiken. Wetzel urges council to amend the measure to cap commercial designation at 26.45 acres within the Planned Urban Development parcel, arguing the 69 acres approved exceed the ordinance limit. Banner ban failed at Aiken City Council on flag display

The Aiken City Council narrowly rejected a Sons of Confederate Veterans request to fly a Confederate flag and three variations at the Civil War memorial from July 22 to July 23. The vote was 3-4 with objections about rights of way and free speech.

Charter proposal dropped in Aiken for charter school plan

Plans to establish a charter school in downtown Aiken were withdrawn by the group that proposed the facility. Dr. Pam Simpson of the Aiken Community School Advisory Board said the applicants pulled their state funding request three weeks ago due to the lack of a charter.

UPS fills positions at Aiken County facility

Aiken County residents eagerly join United Parcel Service after 37 of 43 offers accepted for June 23 hires. Jim W. Anderson reports six may be on vacation and have yet to contact UPS. The 38 million UPS Customhouse Brokerage site is on schedule to open on time to handle import duties and taxes.

Carolina Rebels Bluegrass Fans Pack Hopelands Gardens

The Carolina Rebels performed at Hopelands Gardens as part of a Summer Concert Series in a vibrant bluegrass show. Band members Bobby Welch Tom Sherrod Bob Dockery Don Ashley and Hank Prosser entertained with mandolin guitar banjo and fiddle, led by Prosser as organizer. Prosser recalled the group's 1979 origin and 1994 milestone.
