Irrigation Rules Considered as Drought Strains Crops
Aiken County farmer Carl Brown Jr warns that heat and drought threaten corn yields this year. Plans may require registration for irrigation users exceeding 100000 gallons daily or 10 million gallons monthly, with irrigation systems pumping up to 700 gallons per minute. Brown notes pollination hinges on cool temps and moisture, and he foresees a 30 to 40 bushel crop this year, down from last year’s 100 plus. He cites May rains but says topsoil and subsoil moisture are depleted while wells and streams show no clear rebound.
