Execution scheduled for today in Beaufort County murder case

A 43-year-old Pennsylvania man convicted of torturing and killing Betty Gardner on St. Helena Island 20 years ago faced execution today, barring last minute intervention by the U.S. Supreme Court. Gov. Beasley refused clemency. Gardner, hitchhiking when kidnapped by John Plath and cousin John Arnold, was murdered with racial violence and symbols carved on her body.
