Rose amassed arsenal before suspension by state chief

Associated Press reports Public Safety Director Boykin Rose, now suspended, bought more than 53000 on machine guns night vision gear and high powered shotguns for the Highway Patrol. State law assigns most duties to SLED. Critics say the weapons suit riot control not road policing and raise questions about overreach and misused funds. Gov Beasley ordered a probe into grants and management.

State regains AAA credit rating

South Carolina’s credit rating is restored to AAA by Standard & Poor’s on Tuesday, after years at AA-plus following overspending in 1990s. The rating lowers borrowing costs, with Treasurer Richard Eckstrom noting about $8 million in extra interest had been paid. Governor Beasley called the move a source of pride for the state’s improving economy and finances.
