Hungry piranha named Alice evades capture in city pond

In Santa Barbara California two piranhas nicknamed Alice were spotted in Alice Keck Park Pond causing property damage as turtles lost legs and frogs fled. Fishermen with hooks nets and shock gear failed to trap them though one 17 inch two and a half pound fish was caught on beef bait and described as a strong fight by parks worker Bob Sloan. Biologist Ken Sasaki noted the fish had previously been released after misidentification as a pacu.

Coca-Cola plant worker kills two in Cobb County standoff

John Wallace, 45, opened fire after seizing a hostage at Coca-Cola West Metro Sales Center in Austell. He shot two supervisors, held an employee, and after a seven hour standoff police returned fire. Wallace died at Cobb General Hospital.

Miss Berea Takes Title in 1989 South Carolina Pageant

Kimilee Bryant of Greenville won the 1989 Miss South Carolina Pageant at Greenville Memorial Auditorium to represent the state at Miss America in Atlantic City. The 23 year old Converse College graduate beat 42 competitors, earning an $8,000 scholarship and an invitation to Miss America. Mary Gainey of Greenwood was first runner up, with Tonya Marie Smith among the top ten finalists.
