Aiken City Council schedules a public hearing and second reading for a proposed ordinance. The measure would update tree and landscape standards for city property and development projects.
The Marine Corps Band directed by First Lt. MM Tillar and Drum Major Staff Sgt. D R Wolfe performs at Hopelands tonight. Patrons should bring lawn chairs and park in the Rye Patch lot. if rain forces a change, the concert moves to South Aiken High School.
Beatrice Croft of 143 Redd St in Aiken is charged with attempting to kill her husband after a shooting incident. Police say the 33 year old woman fired a gun at her spouse, and she was taken into custody.
A garbled forecast notes warm weather persists for several days with highs in the 60s and 70s. Skies are expected to be mostly sunny by day and partly cloudy at night with temperatures rising from the low to mid 60s and continuing into the upper 60s to low 70s later in the period.

The Department of Energy extends the L-Reactor restart at SRP to mid 1985 after delays for a 1000 acre cooling lake. Estimated cost up to 35 million, six to nine month hold, with environmental suits and EIS requirements cited. Lake will cool discharges via embankment across Steel Creek to meet water standards. SRP produces plutonium and tritium for the nuclear weapons program. Copies of the DOE decision are available from G A Smithwick in Aiken.
Eight Southeastern states search unsolved murders for links to the Martinez couple deaths in Thomson Georgia. Aiken County Sheriff says active research with no conclusions yet. The Aheads, 47 and 43, possibly slain by a now dead SC man tied to up to 26 Georgia Florida SC NC TN KY AL LA killings. Jody Allen of Iva SC charged with Moore? murders of the Alreads, missing March 21 after $3,000 withdrawal. Bodies found near Thomson in McDuffie County identified tentatively by clothing and effects.
Susan Drake of Clearwater rested in the mountains after competing in the Miss South Carolina pageant in Greenville. She earned a $200 scholarship for appearing, while not reaching finals. USC Aiken business major may switch to physical therapy. Miss Stephanie Cook will represent the county next year.
