The Alken City Council will spend most of Monday explaining the landscaping and tree ordinance set for second reading and a public hearing. At the previous meeting a developer's attorney represented his views before the council and public.
FERC canceled a hydroelectric meeting after controversy over water diversion plans in South Carolina. U.S. Rep. Butler Derrick and peers criticized the process as politically influenced while officials warned it could reduce river flow. Derrick spokesman Al Kambi confirmed the response.
The South Carolina Insurance Department approved rate decreases for three firms, likely lowering premiums for about 10 percent of private passenger auto insurance holders. The companies Farm Bureau Mutual and Casualty, Aetna Casualty and Surety, and American States-American Economy Insurance together write roughly 9.7 percent of SC auto policies, forecasting total consumer savings around 2.16 billion dollars next year, according to state deputy chief insurance official John G. Richards V.
Atlantic City officials plan an ordinance to ban break dancing on the Boardwalk to curb rival groups and theft. Police may enforce an 11 p.m. curfew if confrontations continue.
South Carolina Supreme Court reversed William Dunbar's 1982 housebreaking conviction for entering a utility room through an open door in Aiken County. The ruling found no unlawful breaking since no obstruction to entering was forcibly removed, though the seven year sentence stands on related convictions.
Solicitor Robert Harte said in Aiken County there have been only two cases in 30 years where the exclusionary rule blocked prosecutions. He noted the U S Supreme Court’s 6 3 decision to permit a good faith exception for defective warrants, allowing evidence if police reasonably relied on magistrates. He added magistrates write warrants well and police consult the solicitor, keeping problems low.
A 17 year old Irmo man, Douglas Tillman Brown, faces seven charges after an early morning high speed chase in downtown Aiken. Speeds exceeded 80 mph as the pursuit stretched across Richland Avenue Newberry Street Barnwell Avenue and S C 302 culminating in a crash near the Golden Eagle Club. A 14 year old female runaway from Columbia accompanied Brown. no charges filed yet for the juvenile.
Civilian unemployment dropped to 7.1 percent in June as 460,000 Americans found jobs. The seasonally adjusted rate fell by 0.4 points, the steepest decline since last year’s October to November drop, marking the lowest level since April 1980.
