Hamburg's Reconstruction Era Ties and Massacre Story
A North Augusta history project expands to cover Hamburg's full past from its 1821 founding by Henry Shultz to its decline after the Augusta Canal. The piece traces early commerce, local papers, toll disputes with Georgia, and the 1876 Hamburg Massacre amid Reconstruction era tensions with references to raillines, demographics, and contemporary memorials.
