Moscow condemns U S plans to produce the neutron bomb after a Nevada underground test. A Tass dispatch quotes a Russian commentator urging a quicker path to a settlement in the U S Soviet strategic arms talks and criticizing the American administration for complicating negotiations.
A fire at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury Danbury Conn killed five inmates and injured 71 with burns and smoke inhalation. Firefighters arrived after a duration of emergency alarms as the dormitory in Dor mitory G suffered severe damage amid toxic fumes. The blaze coincided with the prison’s 37th anniversary opening.
Four coal miners died in a southwest Virginia explosion at the P P Coal Co. mine after methane gas concentrations exceeded federal limits. Federal official Frank Mann said a safety violation would be expected in such a blast as bodies were recovered around 2 a.m. and widows gathered at the entrance.
The US Geological Survey reports 70 percent of rivers and streams ran below normal in June while Oregon and Washington saw conditions improve with flows up to twice normal.
