Newcomers Club Meets at Houndslake Country Club

The Aiken Newcomers Club will hold a meeting Tuesday in the ballroom at Houndslake Country Club. Registration for summer meetings starts at 10:30 a.m. with a brief business meeting and lunch at 11:30 a.m. Lunch costs $10.50 and reservations are required by today. Call 642-4436 for details.

USC Aiken offers sum math course for children

The University of South Carolina Aiken continuing education unit offers a July 9 to 13 math course for rising second and third graders titled Math Wonders. Beth Burrow teaches a geometry and problem solving focused program with activities like glyph creation and graph making costing 75 dollars.

Local Salvation Army helps Aiken community with meals lodging and aid

Aiken Salvation Army led by Captain Juan Guadelupe outlines 24 hour service emergency shelter thrift stores and programs like Christmas food distribution and Boys and Girls Club. Last year the shelter served 6519 meals and 2496 lodging days while food vouchers bags of food and toys aided hundreds. The League of Mercy visited 6349 seniors and social services assisted 2657 people with utilities rent and prescriptions. Calls 648-0861 for information and Kiwanis meetings are Tuesdays at 1 pm at Highland Park Grill.

Area groups push used cellphones for domestic violence aid

The Family Center sponsors Cellphones 4 Safety in July and August to collect old phones for victims of domestic violence. Endorsed by local and regional public safety and advocacy groups, phones will be activated with 911 capability and distributed to shelters on both river sides.

Selec tive Service System award honors Spence ally

NAMES NOTES reports Spence received the Selective Service System Exceptional Service Award with a silver medal for distinguished contributions to US military preparedness. Congressman Spence praised the honor and the agency’s role in national security while committing continued support. Navy Ensign Preston D Taylor, son of Janice and Dennis H Taylor, graduated from the Basic Civil Engineer Corps Officer School and is a 1994 Aiken High School graduate who joined the Navy in May 2000. Geisen, a 2001 Strom Thurmond High School graduate, joined the Army under the Delayed Entry Program and will report to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training.
