State system for reporting child deaths called a flop
Aiken County coroner Sue Townsend and Sen Tommy Moore criticize South Carolina's child death reporting system. The State report notes 384 unreported deaths from 1989 to 1999 and questions SLED's role. Townsend says local law enforcement can handle cases without overreliance on SLED. She alleges lost reports and poor review involvement. Moore suggests a better method could exist but condemns turf battles between agencies.
