Wagener Fire Dept Open House and July Celebration

The Wagener Volunteer Fire Department hosts an open house and July celebration with an old-time family theme on Saturday. A parade starts at 11 a.m. followed by a noon barbecue lunch and activities including a greased pig contest, sack races, karaoke for all ages, mud pit tug of war, BB gun shoot, pie and watermelon eating contests, arm wrestling, and horseshoes.

Eight-year-old boy dies from accidental gunshot wound

An 8-year-old Aiken County boy, John Michael Harris, died at Aiken Regional Medical Centers after a single gunshot wound to the chest. Coroner Sue Townsend said the death appeared accidental, with the father, Thomas Newton Harris Jr., driving him to the hospital. An autopsy is set for 2 pm today in Newberry as the Aiken County Sheriff’s Department and State Law Enforcement Division investigate.

Kevorkian assists in death of 63 year old California woman

Dr. Jack Kevorkian aided in the death of Shirley Kline of Oceanside California at Royal Oak Michigan hospital. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger said Kline suffered widespread bowel cancer and died with Kevorkian, his client’s son, and two friends present. Emergency staff failed to revive her.

Knox Avenue Celebrates Independence Day Parade

Emergency funds rescue lives in Aiken County plea

Robert Besley Jr of the Aiken Rescue Squad secured a $17,000 United Way allocation for a new rescue vehicle. The vehicle arrived just as Col John McCormack suffered a stroke while visiting, and Besley’s team, all volunteers, provided timely treatment. McCormack recovered while funding ensures reliable first response. prior vehicle was an unreliable 14-year-old surplus van.
