A small bomb in a garbage container exploded about 300 yards from the U.S. Embassy in Madrid at 8 25 a.m. Police said another small bomb was defused nearby minutes later and another has been neutralized Sunday evening. No group claimed responsibility. A reception was planned at the embassy for the Fourth of July.
Today and Tuesday will be hot and humid with highs in the mid 80s and lows around 70. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible. Details appear on Page 5A.

President Reagan calls the Navy justified in destroying the Iranian jetliner with 290 aboard after officials believed it was an attacking warplane. He promises a full investigation into unanswered questions about the Persian Gulf tragedy and extends condolences to victims' families.
The Soviet Union and China urged the United States Navy to withdraw from the Persian Gulf after a warship shot down an Iran Air jetliner with 290 aboard. Britain supported the U S action while Iran vowed revenge and several nations called for peace in the region.
On July 4 the nation marks its 212th birthday with a space shuttle Discovery rollout at Kennedy Space Center and a tragic Iranian airliner downing. President Reagan calls the missile attack a terrible human tragedy as parades and festivals proceed nationwide.
Rain and threatening clouds kept many people away from South Carolina’s beaches and the Freedom Weekend Aloft balloon festival in Greenville. Hotels and motels stayed packed through Sunday with crowds and traffic, while balloon pilots performed the Key Grab as the rain cleared by early afternoon and spectators grew in number.
Politicians, Hare Krishnas and others prayed for rain to end a crop killing drought that canceled Fourth of July fireworks. Governors Thompson in Illinois and others urged statewide prayer while crews battled forest fires in several states. Forecasters predicted scattered showers nationwide except the parched Midwest. farmers and priests urged repentance and faith as no rain was forecast through Friday.
