S C GOP leadership picks nominees outside party process
South Carolina Republican Party leaders have meddled in primary races, breaking with tradition by endorsing candidates. Chairman Katon Dawson backed a newcomer in a U S House race, triggering criticism as Ralph Norman faced a party pick against John Spratt. Critics say the moves could divide the party ahead of the 2008 presidential primary. Dawson defends backing a candidate who could self fund against a national opponent.
