Fourth Festivities Set Today At N A Stadium

North Augusta hosts the th annual Freedom Festival at 7 30 p m July 3 at North Augusta Senior High stadium. Speakers include U S Sen Strom Thurmond and Rev Claude Smithermier. Fort Gordon Army bands Children Chorus and Community Chorus perform. Fireworks start at dark. Sponsors spent about 2000 on fireworks. Community choir pieces include music by Nelle Spratt. Refreshments and Statue of Liberty donations. Sponsored by American Legion Post 71 and North Augusta Chamber of Commerce.

Strand expected to draw 350000 tourists over two weekends

Myrtle Beach area merchants and hotel officials say the Fourth of July midweek schedule could boost business for two holiday weekends. Officials estimate about 350000 visitors over the period, up from 300000 last year, with daily spending around 35 dollars and occupancy near nine percent.

Sires Named To DOE Post For Savannah River Plant

Melvin J. Sires III named assistant manager for operations at the Savannah River Plant. He succeeds Edward S. Goldberg, reassigned to Deputy Manager at DOE Richland Operations Office. Sires oversees nuclear materials production, reactor and fuel facilities, budget, and SRP laboratory planning.

North Augusta fights river flow in hydro plant dispute

North Augusta City Council demands a minimum 1900 cubic feet per second river flow if Augusta builds a hydroelectric plant on the Augusta Canal. The 1983 South Carolina Traffic Accidents report shows Aiken County had 21 traffic deaths and 359 injuries with $10.7 million in losses. Statewide 92,277 accidents caused 645 deaths and 23,458 injuries with $440 million in losses. City of Aiken saw 2 deaths and 154 injuries from 649 accidents.
