Minnesota faces first state government shutdown since 1990
More than 9,000 state employees were sent home as Democrats and Gov. Tim Pawlenty failed to agree on funding for schools and health care, closing rest stops and licensing offices while essential services like the state patrol continued. An 11th hour deal kept parks open for the holiday weekend. Officials warned layoffs could extend past July 15. Politicians traded blame as the impasse halted nonessential work.
