Peres Arafat Meet in Gaza Try for July West Bank Pullout
PLO chief Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met at the Erez checkpoint to narrow gaps on a July 1 deadline for withdrawing Israeli troops from the West Bank. Negotiators said gaps remain wide and a signed agreement was not ready, with talks to continue later in the month. Palestinian protests erupted in West Bank cities as violence rose amid another missed autonomy deadline. About 50 protesters were arrested as tear gas dispersed crowds. The talks focus on Israeli pullout from Palestinian cities, Palestinian elections, and power transfer to the autonomy council. Peres and Nabil Shaath cited reconciling Palestinian demands for a wide pullout with Israel’s need to protect 135,000 settlers.

Thagard vows longer Earth stays after Mir mission
NASA astronaut Norman Thagard says he will stay home longer after returning from the Mir complex aboard Atlantis. He regrets long separations from his wife Kirby and their three sons, noting space life heightens his appreciation for family while noting weight loss and concerns about calcium loss and radiation. He and Russian crewmates Dezhurov and Strekalov will depart Mir on Tuesday and land at Kennedy Space Center on Friday, marking a rare return in a foreign spacecraft.
