Butterfield, Nixon's former appointments secretary, testifies as the lead witness in the final phase of the House impeachment inquiry. He faces a day-long closed hearing focusing on the White House command structure during the Watergate investigation.
A Los Angeles federal jury awarded Robert A. Maheu 17.3 million dollars in his defamation suit against Howard Hughes. Damages for the second phase will be determined starting October 8 by the same six jurors. Maheu called the verdict vindicating.
The Savannah River Community Pre-Release Center opened with six residents transferred from Columbia. The six will train and work in the community as renovations continue, with capacity expected to rise to 12 this week and possibly 25 by July end. The center provides meals and charges $28 weekly for room and board.
Aiken County purchases the ambulance service from Paramedical Services Inc for about $81,000 after the county board set the figure. The county will own fixed assets and accounts receivable while Paramedical covers liabilities and taxes. payrolls were in arrears due to a bank freeze. John D. Surles to run operations as Ambulance Commission oversees the transition, with staffing to shift from overtime to additional hires.

She says revenue sharing funds fund only capital outlays and one time expenditures, with ordinary funds paying the annual budget. Expenditures total 3.504 million for the county budget, while entitlement money is tracked across four periods with multiple certificates and accrued interest.
