Aiken and Barnwell fire units fought a major blaze at Windsor Elementary School yesterday afternoon. The fire destroyed the building housing 200 students who were safely evacuated after smoke was detected. Firefighters from multiple departments responded but could not control the fire.
Windsor Elementary suffered total loss as fire from a basement source swept through walls and into the ceiling. No injuries occurred as 200 students and 18 faculty were evacuated. pupils will attend Oakwood School in Montmorenci while officials plan emergency relocation.
Investigators say U S refiners earned over 3 billion dollars in unjustified heating oil and diesel price increases last year. The panel chair cites a 130 dollar winter bill rise for the typical heating oil user and calls for price controls as groups petition the Energy Department for ceilings.
Ten more planeloads of Soviet troops and supplies arrived at Kabul airport delaying civilian traffic. AN-22 cargo planes landed and parked nose to tail in snow and began unloading troops trucks and vehicles as foreign travelers watched.
In western Iran, heavy fighting between revolutionary guards and Kurdish rebels continued with clashes at Tehran University. Tehran reports say at least 10 dead and 20 injured on Wednesday. Pars news agency says rebels killed two army officers held since Monday in Salmas.
