Senator Gilbert E. McMillan says a write-in campaign could force him to reconsider his decision not to seek re election to the South Carolina Senate. The 12 year Republican veteran has declined, but says a write in victory might compel him to think it over though he did not commit to returning to the Senate.
A blast of arctic air has cleared into South Carolina sending lows from the mid teens in the mountains to the mid 20s on the coast. Aiken County reported sub 20 temperatures as a large high pressure system brings bright clear skies through the weekend.
The Associated Press market basket survey shows January grocery inflation at 0.7 percent, down from 2.6 percent in December. Slower price rises came from eggs and meats with frozen orange juice concentrate also cheaper at many stores. economist Paul Westcott of the USDA said it could signal broader citrus price declines.

The Labor Department reports January unemployment at 6.2 percent, an 18 month high, with adult men bearing the brunt as layoffs spike in auto, steel, and housing. Total jobless at 6.4 million while total employment falls to 97.8 million, amid forecasts of a possible mild recession in 1980.
Jurors were drawn for the criminal conspiracy trial of Judy Henson and Jeff Henson plus co-defendants Ricky and Jeff Baughman on charges of conspiring to burn a car and report it lost to collect insurance. Also in court, H. Ed win Platt Jr. was found guilty of driving under the influence and given a one year sentence with probation alternatives.
