Kathy Salley, 30, of Aiken, was found guilty of homicide by child abuse after a seven hour, two day jury deliberation. She received a total 20 year sentence with 12 years suspended to eight years to serve, plus a minimum of 85 percent before eligibility for release. Gregory's relatives expressed thanks for closure.
New Ellenton Chief Johnny Hamilton died from injuries after a two car collision in Perry. Hamilton, not wearing a seat belt, was en route to collect papers when his Crown Victoria failed to stop at Walker and Poole roads. His girlfriend Maria Kennedy was hospitalized with serious injuries. Donnie Black suffered injuries but was treated and released. A flag will fly over town hall in memory of Hamilton.
In Cabot, a 1,800 pound draft horse named Cabot Trail struggled to rise after a frigid January night. Owner Pixie Baxter cited the unusually cold temperature and the horse’s weight pressing on a frozen leg as factors. The horse’s rear right limb remained immobile as the community rallied to help.
