Archaeologists and divers may have located the Confederate submarine Hunley off Sullivan’s Island in Charleston Harbor. The Hunley sank with nine crew after attacking the USS Housatonic on February 17, 1864, becoming the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat.
In Pickens a jury cleared Greenville radio personality Bob Hooper on charges he fondled two girls in a van during a broadcast last spring. Hooper spoke of his relief after nine months of legal ordeal while Andy Sisk warned the verdict may chill future abuse victims.
The Aiken Standard increases home delivery to $8.50 monthly effective February 1. Current subscribers paid through the circulation office will retain their expiration dates. Newsstand prices remain unchanged.

Replacing 491 million lost by eliminating property taxes for schools and local governments raises budget and service questions. College tuition could rise, and spending controls for counties cities and schools may emerge.
