WALHALLA AP The historic Stumphouse Tunnel closed since a July ceiling collapse will be permanently sealed off. Park officials cited risk of further collapses and repair costs. The tunnel, built as part of the 1830s Blue Ridge Railroad project, is over 130 years old and will be sealed while the park remains open.
Former New Ellenton Mayor Randy Shaw speaks in a four part series starting Sunday about the $5 million sewer project that doomed his term in Aiken County. Shaw describes his side of the sewer system affair and his path to federal sentencing in an interview with Aiken Standard reporter Carl Langley.

About 100 volunteers from across South Carolina joined the Brotherhood of Builders to construct Hillview Baptist Church on Highway 1 in Bath. They range from 20s to 70s and traveled from various towns to donate labor for the 14,000 square foot project.
U S District Judge Matthew Perry blocked shipments of spent nuclear fuel rods from Europe to the Savannah River Site, ordering a full environmental impact statement which could take up to two years. The ruling follows a South Carolina lawsuit challenging DOE urgency claims and nonproliferation goals. Governor Beasley welcomed the decision while DOE reviews options.
North Augusta high school bus drivers held an emergency meeting after a student banned from riding the bus assaulted Area 2 Transportation Supervisor John Lloyd. The student, under 15, was charged with assault and district discipline will follow. Drivers voiced fear of violent, unruly students.
Eldon M. Berry a longtime critic of closed sessions will not attend executive or other secret meetings over the sewer bond issue and related lawsuit. He sent a two paragraph letter to the other six council members effective immediately, becoming the second member to boycott such sessions.
