SCEA Lawyers Study Deduction Amendment

South Carolina Education Association lawyers will study a compromise payroll deductions bill to see if it allows SCEA dues to be taken from teachers paychecks. The bill faces a Marchant amendment prohibiting deductions for labor unions, described as badly drawn by SCEA spokesman Joe Grant. The House approved the amendment 64 47 after a 107 4 tentative approval of the bill ending a filibuster. The measure would allow donations to United Way and Good Health Appeal and additions for banks and credit unions. Marchant said the amendment narrowly precludes any deduction for labor unions. Grant noted SCEA is not deemed a union by the Department of Labor.
