Washington reports that President Reagan will remove remaining price and allocation controls on petroleum. Consumers fear gasoline and heating oil could rise 8 to 12 cents per gallon in coming weeks, while officials expect a smaller rise of 3 to 5 cents over the next two months.
Marilyn Riviere of Aiken owned Gravel Ridge Ques chosen as mother to a Reagan White House puppy. Ques was flown to Middleburg Virginia to meet sire Heritage Willie but a veterinarian reports no puppies are on the way. Frank McCrosson pins a No button amid unsolicited attention and laughs at age.
A Washington parade honors returning hostages with yellow to gold ribbons, flags, and cheers along Constitution Avenue to the White House. Banners and signs fill the crowd while some vendors sell mementos. one bus carries a bitter note urging Iraqi War Bonds. Kathryn Smith, former Aiken Standard reporter, covered the scene.
Washington welcomed the released hostages with a jubilant White House ceremony led by President Reagan. The 52 Americans, freed after 444 days in Iran, began leave to hometowns and temporary posts after a night at a suburban hotel. They expect about 30 days of vacation before resuming duties or ordinary life.
Sen. Strom Thurmond quoted Winnsboro native William E. Belk as saying faster U.S. action could have spared the 444 day Iran hostage ordeal. Thurmond spoke during a 12 mile motorcade from Andrews Air Force Base to the White House after the hostages’ return. Belk bears no ill will toward Iranians but resents the Ayatollah and captors.
An emergency physician explains that many chills headaches and fever labeled as the flu are actually colds or viruses. He notes flu is usually more severe lasting a week or longer with nausea and diarrhea, and emphasizes rest fluids and aspirin for symptom relief.
