Death penalty in Carter case jury selection proceeds
Prosecutors aim for the death penalty as over 120 potential jurors are questioned in panels of six. About 42 to 50 jurors will form the pool for 12 jurors and alternates, with 20 already in that pool and more to be added. Questioning centers on death penalty beliefs, mercy, aggravating and mitigating factors, and potential biases, with further sessions planned. Teddy Kulmala reports from the Aiken Standard crime beat.

Judge refuses to toss Perry case in Texas
Texas District Judge Bert Richardson rejected Perry defense motions to dismiss the felony abuse of power case against former Gov. Rick Perry. The ruling allows the 2013 veto and related actions to proceed, noting Texas law bars pretrial constitutional challenges to statutes as applied to a specific defendant. Perry, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, remains under consideration with a possible May decision.
