Sleet and snow threaten SC as power crews work hard

South Carolina braces for more sleet and snow while utility workers restore power to customers who lost service Earlier in the week. Prices rise as heaters and milk fly off shelves. Hold on road rankings urged

Aiken County Administrator William Shepherd urged freezing the top five roads on a priority list to help paving. The move would allow time to obtain easements and inform property owners their roads would be protected on future lists. The committee also set C Fund allocations for 1989 2000 and increased city funding for Aiken and North Augusta to about 212 000.

Chamber honors its citizens of year in Aiken event

The Aiken Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at the University of South Carolina Aiken honored leaders across business and community service. Winners included Carlos Garcia as business person of the year, Kitty Windham as woman of the year, Joe Babb as man of the year, and Matt Robinson as youth of the year for his leadership and volunteer work with hearing impaired students, church groups, and Salkehatchie Summer Service. The award carried a $1,000 scholarship. Windham, described as devoted and active in many groups, and Babb, lauded for civic service and support of veterans memorial projects, were highlighted for their community impact.

Government Services selects Aiken for new HQ

Morrison Knudsen Westinghouse Government Services Group will locate its corporate headquarters on Newberry Street in downtown Aiken at the vacant Twin Mark and Whittle Building. The move, tied to the Westinghouse Savannah River Site legacy, is expected to boost downtown redevelopment, add jobs, and expand regional economic activity with 14,500 employees and $24 billion in contracts nationwide. Governor Hodges and Commerce official Charles Way joined MK and city leaders for the announcement.

Sharing the stage for Morrison Knudsen HQ and playhouse

Adam Burton reports the proposed Morrison Knudsen Government Services Group headquarters will double as the Aiken Community Playhouse. Designed by McDonald Law the two story brick complex totals two 18,000 square foot facilities joined by a shared 2,500 square foot two story lobby and courtyard.
