Board follows updates on key South Carolina education bills

Aiken County Board of Education heard updates on three bills: replacing the elected State Superintendent with gubernatorial appointment, creating an Office of Freedom of Information Act Review within the Administrative Law Court, and financing school facilities through bonds and other aid. Liner outlined progress, noting the superintendent bill has momentum and FOIA reform sits in judiciary committees. The facilities bill would repeal the existing bond act and rely on bonds or the 1 percent sales tax, with determinations by the State Board of Education. The session began January 10 and runs through June 2018.
