County weathered major assault on its economy
Aiken County faced a severe six year downturn as Savannah River Site layoffs sliced thousands of jobs and billions in income losses. Employment fell from 25,180 in 1991 to 15,032 in 1997 while regional impact remained strong due to diversification efforts and continuing SRS influence. If new missions like tritium or plutonium work arise, SRS could rebound as a leading regional employer.
