Aiken County Schools Delay Start Amid Snow Flurries

Frigid weather prompted Aiken County public schools to open two hours late. At 6 a.m. temperatures reached 13 degrees at the Aiken Standard weather center. Aiken Technical College and USC Aiken planned regular hours. Some students were sent home after morning snow flurries as district officials cited transportation safety and potential mechanical issues. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bill Gallman outlined steps to minimize bus problems.

Cold weather grips Aiken County with record low

Frigid conditions persist as the National Weather Service warns of cold snaps with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the upper teens. By weekend temps rise to the mid and upper 40s with nights in the 20s and a 40 percent chance of precipitation Sunday night possibly bringing more snow Monday morning. Across the state, winter weather triggered hundreds of ACCIDENTS Thursday, with 898 collisions reported 5 am to 3 pm, mostly weather related and no fatalities. Homeowners urged to insulate pipes and seal openings to prevent frozen pipes, including disconnecting hoses and wrapping exposed plumbing.

Gas leak scare prompts downtown evacuation in Aiken

Firefighters from Aiken Public Safety braved cold Thursday to respond to a gas leak near Aiken Brewing Co and a nearby house fire. The Alley was blocked off while an SCE&G worker and firefighters investigated. The leak was a frozen relief valve on the gas line, resolved after hot water. Diners from Malia's and Ferrano's Italian Pizzeria were interrupted as patrol cars and a fire truck patrolled the area.
