Maurice E. Lester, a 41 year old North Augusta public safety officer, says TV and film misrepresent policing. He notes real officers cannot freely grab, shoot, or act on impulse and must constantly control actions to avoid liability. He entered law enforcement at 33 after Air Force service and a stint in restaurant management.
Lester recounts career moves from Howard Johnson to North Augusta and Goose Creek Police, totaling nine years before returning to North Augusta where he serves now. He cites helping people as his motive and dislikes fires crimes and abuse, as he has four children including Michael 19 and Melissa 17. He is married to Pam Bercue Lester of North Charleston.
The Gregg-Graniteville Foundation in Graniteville grants 1000 dollars to Recording for the Blind to provide free loaned recorded educational books to blind and print handicapped people in the Aiken and Augusta areas. RFB, based in Princeton New Jersey, has supplied over one million taped books to more than 100000 students and professionals in the United States and 47 foreign countries since 1948.
