Lawyers for area street preachers ask the U.S. Court of Appeals to compel U.S. District Judge Matthew Perry to rule on arguments heard in 1992 about Beauforts noise ordinance. They note a status conference request from October went unanswered and renew an injunction petition filed in December.
Investigators probe cause of Thursday fire in Barnwell County that killed a 49 year old woman an 18 year old man and a 3 year old girl and left three others injured. Kathy Salley 15 remains in serious condition at Augusta Regional Medical Center with burns over 26 percent of her body.
The city of Aiken opens new baseball fields at Banks Mill and Pine Log roads with a $2.3 million project. The complex hosts the Feb 25 Academic Team Benefit tournament and Citizens Park grand opening on March 4. About 50 teams start play, with 20 tournaments planned through spring and weekly events starting March 11.
A House Senate panel backs major tax cuts for homeowners and car assessments while raising the sales tax to 6 percent to cover a 671 million dollar shortfall. The plan eliminates food sales tax for three years and tightens phone and car purchase exemptions, clashing with Gov Beasley who opposes tax shifts and vows a veto or alternative proposal.
Columbia South Carolina Senator Theo Mitchell, the first in state history to be expelled, received a 10400 salary and 500 postage payment for a part time job. His daughters say the money will be held by their lawyer while the expulsion is challenged in the state Supreme Court.
Rep. Tom Keegan of Surfside Beach says the governor should see the public demand for property tax relief and that Beasley may be open to negotiation to avoid confrontation.
Aiken County residents gathered for an aging issues forum hosted by the Aiken Area Council on Aging and the Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center. They discussed transportation access, income security, family care, and housing as part of input for the 1995 White Conference on Aging.
