Three Arab terrorists fled Paris aboard a French supplied Boeing 707 after a failed attack on an Israeli jet at Orly Airport. A gun battle left 21 injured, eight seriously, as hostages were freed unharmed. The terrorists sought asylum east toward Iraq after the siege and landing denial in Lebanon.
Premier Chou En-lai warned that U S Soviet rivalry will lead to a world war. In a Jan. 13 speech to the National People's Congress broadcast by Peking radio, he said China’s relations with the United States have improved slightly but Sino Soviet relations worsened. He urged preparation for war and named the two superpowers as the sources of a new global conflict.
Wallace begins a third term with a warning that the people deserve a full accounting from leaders for a faltering economy and mismanaged government. He did not mention 1976 either but said he will speak out when needed.
Sen William Proxmire attacked military spending on golf facilities, citing 13.9 million dollars yearly to run courses for officers and servicemen. He cited a GAO survey from mid 1974 showing courses in 19 foreign countries and the United States.

Two suspects were arrested in an inside conspiracy case at a Dairy Queen on Augusta Highway. An attendant described a gunman but later admitted the robbery was staged to steal about $1700. Police surrounded the area near USC Aiken campus with bloodhounds aiding the search.

Jurors in General Sessions Court acquitted Birt after one and a half hours of deliberation. Birt testified he slept during the incident at Cawley’s Package Shop on York Street and claimed he did not know of the liquor store. Prosecutor argued for the victims’ rights while defense noted lack of fingerprints and missing items. Marva Reed and Louise Smiley pleaded guilty to grand larceny and shoplifting. sentences waived to six years with five years probation.
Congress resumes work after housekeeping duties this week and will open hearings Thursday on President Ford's economic proposals. Opening witnesses include economists Gardner Ackley Paul McCracken and Charles Schultze. Bills to implement Ford's policy must originate in the House Ways and Means Committee.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners will meet to review salary raises for elected and appointed officials totaling about 13 000 and bids for sheriff department patrol cars. Other business includes revenue sharing funded equipment, public hearings on budgets, and a three bid rule for invoices over 500.
